World Youth Day 2013

World Youth Day 2013 – General Information

The next World Youth Day (WYD) will be on the 23-28 July, 2013 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. This will be the first three weeks of Term 3, 2013. Any student in Year 10 and 11 (next year) will be eligible to attend WYD. There are three pilgrimage options being considered: Lima (Peru), Guadalupe (Mexico) or Brazil Direct. The following information is from the Catholic Education Office (Sydney) who are organising WYD Rio 2013.

Before WYD week, all student and teacher pilgrims attending WYD celebrations in Rio will be involved in mission/outreach work in their chosen country of pilgrimage.

This mission approach may involve work of a physical nature and is aimed at enriching the overall WYD experience of the pilgrims and the communities in which they spend time in during the lead up to WYD week.

At the conclusion of WYD week, it is currently anticipated that all pilgrims attending WYD in Rio will take part in a two-day retreat at Iguazu Falls, located on the Brazil/Argentina border. This retreat will give all pilgrims the opportunity to reflect on the experience that they have just gone through in the hope sustaining its effect on them, further into the future.

At all times throughout the planning for WYD 2013, the safety of all student and teacher pilgrims remains the number one priority. A delegation has already attended our countries of pilgrimage and another will be sent in the coming months to carry out thorough risk assessments. The initial delegation to Rio and the current Rio working party are extremely satisfied that all safety considerations are currently being met.

All pilgrims will be required to participate in a formation program as designed and structured by the CEO. This program will be focused on ensuring that students are fully prepared for the experience that they will be undertaking.

Early next term, those students who are interested in attending WYD Rio will be invited to submit an “Expression of Interest” form regarding their potential involvement. This “Expression of Interest” form will be made available by Miss Bautista and simply requires a parental signature prior to its return, indicating that they are interested in receiving more information regarding WYD.

Towards the end of Term 2, and following the distribution of further specific information regarding WYD, students will then be invited to submit a “Confirmation of Interest Form” and a $500 (refundable) deposit to confirm their intentions to participate in WYD. This $500 deposit will also be matched with a $500 subsidy for each student on behalf of the Catholic Education Office.

Regular WYD updates will be made on this website so please keep checking to keep up to date.
